A taste of summer

In addition to the “high bush” blueberries we picked and froze (which we’ve been enjoying in muffins and pancakes), I bought a large bag of wild Maine blueberries on our trip in September. Wild Maine blueberries are tiny and tarter than the large varieties we grow. They make excellent pies, and in honor of our friend’s visit this weekend, we made one.

I’ve yet to master the blueberry pie. It always turn out too liquid-y. By no means is this a disaster…the result is a combination of pie and blueberry syrup, especially good with vanilla ice cream. The small blueberries held surprisingly firm, considering the amount of juice they produced. The pie was delicious, a reminder of summer on a bitter cold day.
